The Past Simple Tense
Usage:
We use the Past Simple Tense to talk about actions that started and finished at
a specific time in the past.
A. Regular verbs:
1. Affirmative Statements (Positive Sentences)
- Rule:
Subject + infinitive verb + [ed / d / ied]
- Explanation:
To form the past tense of regular verbs, we simply add -ed to the
base verb. If the verb already ends in 'e', we just add -d. If the
verb ends in a consonant + 'y', we change the 'y' to 'i' and add -ed.
- Examples:
- She
walked to the park. (Added 'ed')
- They
played football yesterday. (Added 'ed')
- He
liked the movie. (Added 'd' because it ends in 'e')
- The
baby cried all night. (Changed 'y' to 'i' and added 'ed')
B. Irregular verbs:
- Explanation:
Irregular verbs do not follow the simple '-ed' rule. Their past tense form
must be memorized because they change completely.

2. Negative Statements
- Rule:
Subject + did not (didn't) + infinitive verb [inf.]
- Explanation:
To make a negative sentence in the past simple, use didn't and then
the base form of the verb (do not add -ed or use the irregular past form).
- Examples:
- She
didn't watch the sunrise.
- He
didn't clean the tent.
- They
didn't see the show.
- I
didn't go to school yesterday. (Not "went")
3. Interrogative (Yes/No question)
- Rule:
Did + subject + infinitive verb [inf.] + rest of the
sentence?
- Short
answers: Yes, + subject + did. / No, + subject + didn't.
- Examples:
- Did
you listen to stories? -> Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.
- Did
she clean the tent? -> Yes, she did. / No, she didn't.
- Did
they eat dinner? -> Yes, they did. / No, they didn't.
- Note:
When asking a question with "Did", the main verb must be in the
infinitive form [inf.].
Wh-question
- Rule:
Question word + did + subject + infinitive verb [inf.] +
rest of the sentence?
- Examples:
- Where
did you go yesterday? -> I went to the zoo.
- What
did she eat for lunch? -> She ate a sandwich.
- When
did they arrive? -> They arrived at 5 PM.
